Summary

From the New York Times bestselling author of Dear Edward comes a beautifully tender, heartbreaking, and moving story of four sisters over three decades

Meet the Padvano girls。 Best friends and sisters, they are thought of as inseparable by everyone in their close-knit Chicago neighbourhood。 Julia, the eldest, is the "rocket" of the family - she always has a destination in mind and clear plans for how to get there。 Sylvie, the dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book and imagines a life for herself other than the expected path of wife and mother。 Cecelia and Emmeline, the twins, are the artist and the caregiver。 From childhood, the four sisters complete each other, expecting that their family will always be intact。

When Julia falls in love with William Walters, a history student and college sports star, she's delighted by the way her plans for adulthood are coming together。 A husband, a house, a family。 But when darkness from William's past begins to block the light of his future, it is Sylvie, not Julia, who steps in to help。 Suddenly, things shift。 Dynamics and relationships, priorities and secrets - everything that was once a given no longer is。

Rich and vivid, heartbreaking and heart-mending, Hello Beautiful captures the joy, tragedy, trust, and betrayal to ask: what does it mean to be a family? And once shattered, can it be pieced back together?

Hello Beautiful。 This was fantastic。 At first, I was afraid that it wouldn't be for me, but oh man was I glad to be wrong。 The characters were deep and real and the relationships were complex and individual。 This will stay with me I think, for at least a little while。 Hello Beautiful。 This was fantastic。 At first, I was afraid that it wouldn't be for me, but oh man was I glad to be wrong。 The characters were deep and real and the relationships were complex and individual。 This will stay with me I think, for at least a little while。 。。。more

This is currently on pause for me。 Two stars bc it was good enough for me to get just over halfway through it。 Two stars though bc the characters are boring and predictable。 They each have their ONE character trait that is hammered in over and over。 The writing is also very tell not show。 Maybe I’ll pick it back up and finish it but as of now this book is a Did Not Finish。

As someone who loved Dear Edward, I was very excited to read Ann Napolitano ‘s latest novel。 Hello Beautiful details the Padovano sisters and their lives。 Julia is controlling and precise, Sylvie is the reader and seeker of love , Emeline and Cecelia the twins who are happy to have each other and William Waters who is a troubled young man who becomes part of the family。 This story felt contrived and labored。 The author was working diligently at creating characters but the story was weak。 Julia l As someone who loved Dear Edward, I was very excited to read Ann Napolitano ‘s latest novel。 Hello Beautiful details the Padovano sisters and their lives。 Julia is controlling and precise, Sylvie is the reader and seeker of love , Emeline and Cecelia the twins who are happy to have each other and William Waters who is a troubled young man who becomes part of the family。 This story felt contrived and labored。 The author was working diligently at creating characters but the story was weak。 Julia loves her family so deeply and is so controlling yet when her marriage has failed she leaves her dearest sisters in Chicago and moves to New York City not seeing any of them except one for 25 years! She continues to manipulate her daughter but has nothing to do with her loving and caring sisters。 And then lies to her daughter! While some parts dragged on such as William’s mental health issues and the basketball details, Cecelia and Emeline’s stories are quick and sweet and glossed over。 And the closure was too predictable for me。 Thank you #NetGalley for this advanced reader copy of #HelloBeautiful。 。。。more

“Shit, yes。 Kent said this with force”。 “William looked at his friend。 Kent was still at his playing weight and seemed to glisten with youth and health。 They were both twenty-three years old。 William felt at least forty”。 “Julia had started to place her happiness in someone else’s hands, which was the remnant of her Chicago self。 Julia didn’t want to be that person anymore。 In Chicago, she was part of the paper chain of Padavano sisters; they had never operated independently, and if one of them have a problem, they all had a problem”。 “Sylvie was no longer who she used to be, and she wasn’t yet whoever who she was becoming”。 “She was grateful that her father had prepared her for this type of hard, lonely ground。 Because of him, Sylvie knew she could exist outside the boundaries of her past and future selves, for a little while, anyway。 Even though it hurt。 She understood now, though, why her father had tempered the brutal beauty of his kind of life—the kind of honesty—with alcohol, and why she had always been more comfortable in the library with books then in the world with people”。 There are dozen more excerpts I could include …。but I’ll end with what I shared and just add a few more thoughts:There were many “I never thought I would” moments in this novel: …never thought I’d leave Chicago。…never thought Daddy would die。… never thought Mama would move away。…。never thought Sylvie might be falling for Julia’s husband。 These ‘never thought I would’ moments allowed me - and all readers - to look into our own lives and be reminded of the many times ‘WE NEVER’ in a million years — thought we would —[fill in the blank]The twists and turns of life can be so messy, and unpredictable。 Anything can throw us off our game。So what to do?Try to bask in the love, joy, and good things right in front of us —“Hello Beautiful” is ‘family-saga-magnificent!!!! 。。。more

Dealing with an injury and not being able to play basketball William begins to question everything in his life。 What seemed like a bright future, lead to him questioning everything and wanting to leave it all behind。 There is a tenderness with which the author writes that pulls the readers in and makes you feel deeply for all the characters。 I thoroughly enjoyed the storytelling and all the characters I have a very soft spot for。 I loved that the author tackled very hard subjects including depression, suicide, love, regret, death and rejection。 They were dealt with in very layered way and you feel as if you know exactly why the characters did what they did。 Honestly, this was very well done and I know its going to be a favorite for many。 。。。more

I personally really enjoyed this book, but I am a sucker for messy family dramas! William Waters grew up to terribly absent parents and had a childhood devoid of any sort of love。 He develops a passion for basketball and is able to earn a scholarship to Northwestern where he quickly meets Julia Padavano。 William is quickly integrated into Julia's life and is finally able to find acceptance with a loving family in the Padavano parents and Julia's 3 sisters, Sylie, Emeline and Cecelia。 But all of I personally really enjoyed this book, but I am a sucker for messy family dramas! Can we live with the outcomes of those choices, even if that means destroying everything?"。 The way this story was packaged, presented, and digested was so raw。 I had a constant stream of tears during the last maybe 20% and the ending absolutely gutted me。In hindsight, I wouldn't change the slow beginning。 After having seen it through, I loved getting to know every detail about this family。 They're complicated, bold, chaotic, stubborn, and they let way too much time go by without facing their truths。 But at the end of it all, their family's roots will always be connected。 Highly recommend this for anyone who loves a slow burn, family saga, and if you need a good cry。 This will hit you right in the feels。 Huge thanks to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group for this arc! 。。。more

What a heartbreakingly beautiful book。 Once I started, I could not stop (though I did slow at about the 30% mark。) This book is character propelled but with an identifiable plot。 The structure is very interesting; it shifts perspectives but with sometimes overlapping timelines, so you can see the characters' thoughts/motivations for the same situation。 By the end of the book, whether you like the characters or not, you understand them。 This is a book about family and how it shapes us, with the s What a heartbreakingly beautiful book。 Once I started, I could not stop (though I did slow at about the 30% mark。) This book is character propelled but with an identifiable plot。 The structure is very interesting; it shifts perspectives but with sometimes overlapping timelines, so you can see the characters' thoughts/motivations for the same situation。 By the end of the book, whether you like the characters or not, you understand them。 This is a book about family and how it shapes us, with the subtle nod to Little Women。 I have a feeling I'll be thinking about this book for a while。 Trigger warnings for depression, attempted suicide, divorce, loss of a parent, brain tumors 。。。more

Hello Beautiful had me captivated right from the beginning, despite a bit of a slow start。 But please hang in there, dear reader, I promise it is well worth it, through the sweet and the heart-wrenching。 The author has given the characters such depth, and the uncommonly strong bond between the four sisters (which is sometimes stretched to the breaking point), and the solace of friends in the difficult times, can’t help but keep you engaged。

I enjoyed this dramatic family saga, ode to sisterhood and homage to Little Women。 The characters are drawn carefully and Ann Napolitano makes us care about each of the four sisters and the troubled awkward man in their midst who grew up deprived of kindness and love。 Themes such as abandonment, trauma, identity and forgiveness were explored in sensitive ways, although the motives behind some of the characters’ rigid, exacting behavior felt somewhat unmotivated and under explored。 I also wish th I enjoyed this dramatic family saga, ode to sisterhood and homage to Little Women。 The characters are drawn carefully and Ann Napolitano makes us care about each of the four sisters and the troubled awkward man in their midst who grew up deprived of kindness and love。 Themes such as abandonment, trauma, identity and forgiveness were explored in sensitive ways, although the motives behind some of the characters’ rigid, exacting behavior felt somewhat unmotivated and under explored。 I also wish there had been more dialogue as the story moved along rather slowly for my taste, especially during the first third。 There are page after page of interior monologues and very little human interaction, which was surprising for a book about family and sisterhood。 After all, the charm of Little Women lies in the exchanges and connections between the sisters。 It also felt oddly disembodied from its time: we get chapter headings marking the years from the early 1980s to 2008, and yet there a few details that make each decade come alive。 I think the idea here was to make the story feel timeless, but for me it just made the novel feel less authentic and vivid。 Despite my reservations, I’m sure this book will be very successful。 If you enjoy a quiet, introspective, dysfunctional but ultimately heartwarming family saga in the style of Ann Patchett or Anne Tyler, you will most likely enjoy this story of family, sisterhood and redemption。 。。。more

I am very ambivalent about this book。 I didn’t dislike it but I’m not sure I liked it either。 I couldn’t connect with the characters, the sisters’ relationship seemed suffocating and completely foreign to me。 Julia in particular really grated on me。

A friend of mine gave me an advanced copy of this book to read while I recover from a recent surgery。 It was the perfect gift to keep me company while I heal。 The characters and their intertwined lives were beautifully written and I cared about each one and couldn't wait to read the next chapter。 Ann Napolitano has become a favorite author of mine and she grew up in the NJ town where I live。 Highly recommend this wonderful book! This is a rich and emotive story that bursts with beauty。 With so much to ponder it’s the type of book that’s good for the soul and leaves you feeling full, albeit a little tender。 The writing is delicate and beautiful, perfectly capturing the joy, heartbreak and complexity of love。 I can’t remember the last time I was so emotionally invested in characters, and despite not agreeing with all their decisions I found myself cheering them on。 I will flag that this requires a certain level of patienc This is a rich and emotive story that bursts with beauty。 With so much to ponder it’s the type of book that’s good for the soul and leaves you feeling full, albeit a little tender。 The writing is delicate and beautiful, perfectly capturing the joy, heartbreak and complexity of love。 I can’t remember the last time I was so emotionally invested in characters, and despite not agreeing with all their decisions I found myself cheering them on。 I will flag that this requires a certain level of patience, the story is very slow moving。 The first half seems to lag leaving the ending feeling rushed and at odds with the rest of the book。 This was the only reason I didn’t rate it higher。 Having said that I still really enjoyed it, an intense and emotional story, a perfect book club pick。 。。。more
